Pursuing M.Sc Agriculture at Rayat Bahra University: Specializations, Eligibility, Scholarships and Career Scope in 2026

Agriculture still employs more people in India than any other sector. The 2025 Periodic Labour Force Survey puts its share of employment at 43.0%. That is a huge number of farms, farm businesses and rural economies that need people who understand soil, crops and plant health at a deeper level than a first degree usually reaches.
That is where an M.Sc in Agriculture fits. Rayat Bahra University in Mohali offers this two-year program through its University School of Agriculture Sciences, with specializations in Agronomy, Horticulture and Plant Pathology. This blog covers what the program includes, who can apply, what scholarships exist and where it can lead.
Table of Contents
1. Why an M.Sc in Agriculture Makes Sense Right Now
Farming today is not what it was a decade ago. Climate-resilient crops, water-saving methods, soil health management and agri-technology are changing how food gets grown. Companies and government bodies need specialists for all of it.
RBU’s program page cites projections that the global agriculture market will cross USD 12 trillion by 2032. It also mentions over 180,000 new opportunities expected worldwide in sustainable farming, agribusiness and agri-technology by 2035. Treat these as projections, not promises. They do point in one direction, which is more demand for trained people.
2. Choosing Your Specialization
The program is built around crop production, soil science, plant health and sustainable agriculture techniques. Each specialization takes a different angle on those areas.
2.1 Agronomy
This is the scientific study of how crops grow and how land is managed. Think better yields from the same field with smarter use of water, nutrients and soil. It is a common route to research posts and roles in seed and agri-input companies.
2.2 Horticulture
This specialization covers fruits and vegetables. The school lists two streams here, Vegetable Science and Fruit Sciences. Horticulture matters more every year as demand for fresh produce keeps rising.
2.3 Plant Pathology
This field deals with plant diseases. You learn how diseases spread and how to manage them without losing the crop. Crop protection companies, research institutions and universities hire for this kind of expertise.
3. How You Learn at the University School of Agriculture Sciences
Agriculture cannot be learned only from slides. The school’s approach is built around fieldwork, lab experiments, nursery management and modern techniques like hydroponics. Regular farm visits and interactions with industry experts add the outside view.
The school’s own updates show what that looks like. Students have taken part in field practicals on crop management and sustainable farming, and in transplanting operations that teach planting methods and crop spacing. They have also showcased their own agriculture projects at university exhibitions.
The school hosted the 2nd International Conference on Advances in Agriculture Sciences (ICAAS-2026). GLASSCO also demonstrated a three-in-one nitrogen analyser on campus, giving students a look at the lab equipment used in agricultural research. 4. Scholarships That Can Bring the Cost Down
RBU has awarded scholarships worth INR 10 crore to over 2,500 students in 2025. Across the university, the total stands at INR 25 crore plus. Here is what applies to M.Sc students.
4.1 Merit-based
Your graduation percentage decides the waiver. A score of 90% or above earns 70% off tuition. Scores of 80% to 89.99% earn 40%, 70% to 79.99% earn 30% and 60% to 69.99% earn 20%. GATE percentile can also count. A percentile of 95 or above matches the top 70% slab.
4.2 Education Social Responsibility
Students who have lost both parents get a 100% tuition waiver. Those who have lost a single parent get 50%. A single girl child under the Beti Padhao Beti Bachao scheme gets 25%, and so do siblings studying together at RBU.
4.3 Armed Forces and Defence
Wards and spouses of defence personnel, bravery award winners and wards of award-winning teachers get 30% off. NCC, Scouts and Guides and NSS certificate holders get 30% under the Defence Aspirant Scholarship.
4.4 Sports
Waivers run from 30% to 60%, depending on the level of achievement.
5. Recognition for the University
The official school page lists several rankings. The Week ranked RBU 2nd among emerging universities in Punjab for 2026 and 3rd among private universities in Punjab. IIRF placed it 4th in Punjab and 48th across India. The Academic Insights also ranked RBU among India’s Top 10 Artificial Intelligence Universities in 2026.
